Signs You're Getting Old number 13689: you no longer own a 'clubbing purse'. This is not a defensive weapon with which to fend off muggers, though that is quite a good idea in itself, but a miniscule usually shiny or embroidered receptacle capable of holding about £20 and a door key (and possibly an emergency tampon). There was a time when every female I knew had a clubbing purse. Before a night out, you removed the above mentioned necessities from your normal purse, leaving all your credit cards, library cards, video cards, train tickets, old receipts and other assorted crap at home and taking instead your clubbing purse, which could be held unobtrusivey in the hand while dancing non-stop until 3am. This avoided such indignities as cloakroom charges and dancing round your handbag, although it didn't necessarily suit the vainer members of the species who couldn't go anywhere without their hairbrush, lipstick, mascara, mirror and eyelash curlers. I haven't had a clubbing purse since about 2002 :(Tags: ageing 09:56 . . .
A thought about seagulls: their distinctive cry always sounds quite pleasantly evocative when heard down the phone, or on the radio, or generally as part of an ambient summery soundscape. And yet in real life it's pure auditory hell. I suppose when you only hear them you can fondly imagine that they're just little V shapes in a distant blue sky, over an azure sea, ie. where they're supposed to be. As opposed to stalking menacingly around park benches, swooping down on your rubbish bags or shitting on your picnic. Oh and waking you up at 4am. 16:03 . . .
