"I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library."

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the FINAL word count. Because I handed it in yesterday. HELL YEAH! Of course, every cell in my body is currently screaming that I could have done more, or better, or more nicely laid out, or a completely different topic altogether, but frankly I could have been working on it until 2050 and still not been satisfied. So, that's IT (or should I say that's IS hoho.) In July I'll officially be a Librarian (albeit an unemployed one, and providing that AUT action doesn't prevent me from receiving my degree...)

Definitely at a point in my life when this survey seems pertinent:

Ten years ago, it was 1996. Take this survey, post the results, and see how many things have changed since then.

1) How old were you?
THEN: 1996 - 17/18
NOW: 2006 - 27/28

2) Where did you work?
THEN: 1996 - workshy student
NOW: 2006 - university language centre

3) Where did you live?
THEN: 1996 - at home with parents in Lewes, East Sussex, then in shoebox/hall of residence at York University
NOW: 2006 - rented 1-bed flat in Brighton

4) How was your hair style?
THEN: 1996 - unkempt brown pony tail
NOW: 2006 - oh dear, unkempt brown pony tail

5) Did you wear contacts?
THEN: 1996 - no
NOW: 2006 - no

6) Did you wear glasses?
THEN: 1996 - yes
NOW: 2006 - yes

7) Who was your best friend?
THEN: 1996 - Clare/Georgie
NOW: 2006 - Georgie/Matt

8) Which of your pets were still alive?
THEN: 1996 - dog (Lucy), cats (Portia and Cobweb)
NOW: 2006 - cats (Portia and Cobweb), new dog (Eve). RIP Lucy :(

9) Who was your boyfriend/girlfriend?
THEN: 1996 - virtual boy drought until August and A.D. (the first in a long line of Scottish errors). Then from October until some time in 1997, P.M.G.
NOW: 2006 - been with M.H. for the last five years, married July 2005

11) Who was your celebrity crush?
THEN: 1996 - Jarvis Cocker/Alex James
NOW: 2006 - Rob Lowe

12) Who was your regular-person crush?
THEN: 1996 - no idea
NOW: 2006 - nobody

13) How many piercings did you have?
THEN: 1996 - none (had just let the single one in my right ear close up after an embarrassingly brief experiment)
NOW: 2006 - none

14) How many tattoos did you have?
THEN: 1996 - 0
NOW: 2006 - 1

15) What was your favorite band/singer?
THEN: 1996 - Pulp, Blur, Radiohead
NOW: 2006 - no favourites really

16) Had you smoked a cigarette?
THEN: 1996 - no
NOW: 2006 - one, during my final undergrad exams.

17) Had you gotten drunk?
THEN: 1996 - yes, mainly on cider and Archers
NOW: 2006 - ten years, tens of thousands of drinks...

18) Looking back, are you where you thought you would be in 2006?:
Hm, I REALLY didn't think I'd be married (though I hoped I'd be in a relationship). And I didn't have any clear idea where I'd be geographically, to be honest - the world was my oyster. I thought I'd be a high-flying editor/arts administrator type and a famous-ish and prolific poet, rather than a lowly resource assistant, putative librarian and non-famous occasional poet. But I'm probably happier than I thought I would be as well.

Despite my own criticisms of Brighton's Jubilee Library, I nevertheless feel moved to defend it whenever I hear other people slagging it off. Something to do with my eternal gratitude and pleasure that public libraries even exist, I suspect. Or maybe I just didn't like the aggressive tone of the particular library user who made his feelings clear in my vicinity on Friday. He was sitting at the catalogue harrumphing to himself for a while, before exploding into such well thought-out complaints as 'this library's a FUCKING joke!' and 'where are all the books!! It's a bloody kid's library, look at it!' And most stupidly 'there was nothing wrong with the old building'. Nothing except for a chronic lack of storage, shelf space, disabled access (whole sections being housed high up on a rickety balcony) and modern facilities, that is. He then asked a staff member to help him with the 'useless' catalogue, only to interrupt with furious hand gestures and 'no, I'm not interested in that'/'no I don't want STORIES'. How could I not side with the poor library staff?
