Information Retrieval Failure Of The Week: I can be quite a div sometimes. Two students were looking for a video clip on our server, which I knew we had. Couldn't remember how it was categorised so instead of browsing I did a keyword search. It's a clip about Amélie Nothomb, so I cleverly deduced that her name would come up in a search. Nothing. I tried the programme title. Absolument rien. Tried just her last name in case it was accent-sensitive and not picking up the first name (it is a stupid system, after all). Still rien. Finally tried browsing and more through luck than skill hit on the correct category and sub-category and there she was. Why hadn't I found it when searching? Maybe because I'd spelt her name 'Northomb'. Yep. Cavalier abuse of proper names, the novice searcher's downfall. Shocking.

Spent the weekend moving into our lovely LOVELY new flat. Ok, it's pretty small but it has central heating, a working fireplace, a garden and nothing visibly wrong with it (unlike the old place which seems like even more of a wreck now that we've emptied it of all the stuff that was covering up the damp patches, dead gas fires, dodgy paint jobs etc).

Also I am back in my favourite area of Brighton, close to the Duke of Yorks, Sunny Foods, the Open Market, Preston Park AND I can now get the train to work again. Six minutes instead of forty!
