"I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library."

The First Law of the Dissertation: the interest you have in your topic is inversely proportional to the interest the rest of the world has in it. Do not try to remedy this situation by waving your arms around excitedly and talking ever faster when you notice people's eyes glazing over. It is the natural order of things. In a few months time it will all be over and you'll find the whole thing as boring as any sane normal person.

It's official. I am a) middle-aged and b) middle-class. Proof: I was on my way home last night when my bus stopped inexplicably on North Street for about five minutes, and I realised that I was muttering under my breath 'hurry UP, I'm going to miss The Archers'. Frightening.

Nowhere online seems to have this news up yet, but David Harsent has won the 2005 Forward prize for Best Collection with Legion. I was rooting for John Burnside or Alice Oswald, but never mind.

Fresher quote of the day:
"What's the... um... registration thingy... for this place?"
"To register you just need to fill in this form."
"And... why should I do that?"
"Look lady, you asked ME. Quite frankly I'd be happy if you never darkened my door again, because it would mean one less bit of pointless paperwork for me."

Next time I write 'I like fresher's week', please feel free to shoot me for being an idiot. I registered/inducted over 120 students last week, and I now want to lock myself in my bedroom for at least a month. Except I have 120+ registration forms to file first...
