Quin just reminded me about my old favourites, the CAP Movie Ministry (last mentioned here in relation to Harry Potter), who have now directed their penetrating Christian gaze at Hitchhikers. Censured for including, amongst other things, 'guzzling' and - under the heading of Wanton Violence - 'parasite penetration into a human head'. Clearly CAP have somewhat missed the point of the Babelfish here (which after all has solid biblical ancestry). They do rightly identify 'destruction of the Earth' as a crime, though. Well done.
This on Toothpaste for Dinner made me laugh lots, although I have to admit I've never encountered the specific anti-social behaviour described.
Later that evening we went to see The Ladyboys of Bangkok. My word. So great and yet so disturbing on multiple levels. If you're a heterosexual man, you obviously face the uncomfortable possibility of finding them attractive (and they undeniably ARE). If you're a woman, you get to feel cross at the shallow travesty of womanhood they represent while also being totally envious of their ability to wear hotpants. And that's another thing: HOW are they wearing hotpants? I mean, where are they PUTTING the attributes of their maleness which (apparently) they still possess?
This last question was discussed in probably far too much detail on Saturday at S's pondwarming/barbecue. It certainly put me off my sausages... But we did also have time to admire the pond and its fauna and flora, including the fattest tadpoles I've ever seen. Exciting solar-powered waterfall too!
Book 40: Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury Odd that I hadn't read this before really, being a librarian and not averse to science fiction. It was good. Although, it seemed sometimes like Bradbury would get an idea and run with it so far and fast that syntax, grammar and meaning got left behind a bit.
