"I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library."

I'm happy to report that my new filing system is a complete success, although the boss hasn't actually seen it yet and is bound to disapprove as she disapproves of every idea I ever have, even though she comes in here only about once a year and is not the one who actually has to use the crappy old systems she is so keen on. Anyway.

I can't actually remember what I'm supposed to DO today. I mean, I'm at work, I'm at my desk, but that's as far as my brain has progressed this morning. All the excitement of filing overhaul (not to mention a thrilling spat with the Spanish department) this week has pushed out real work until today. And now I can't recall what it is I actually get paid for. Existential crisis or hangover? Not sure yet.

Book 9: The Best of McSweeneys, Vol. 1 edited by Dave Eggers
I've not been an avid McSweeneys reader, partly because buying literary journals is, well, expensive. And partly because I'm not really in love with the short story/essay format; I often feel it's asking either too much or too little of me, somehow. I can enjoy short fiction once I make myself read it though, and this collection was a good introduction to authors I now want to read more of. Which I suppose is the point. Another gripe with McSweeneys though: I have a reflexive Puritan mistrust of design fripperies, and Eggers' introduction to this book had me - unfairly I'm sure - gasping in horror at the extravagance: "For each issue, I would fly from Boston to Reykjavik, each time asking the printers there what was possible. Could we do a four-color foldout? Could we create an issue with fourteen separate booklets, all held together inside a cardboard box?" Ack!

I am clearly going to hell, because instead of nodding supportively I am giggling at this sentence: Please sign our petition and show Walmart that we do NOT want CrabInACup (or any animal in a cup) and that this type of animal cruelty will not be condoned.

Sometimes I'm glad that fashion and I are, by and large, complete strangers. At the moment, for example, every female student on campus seems to be wearing a pink tweed coat. My eyes and brain are starting to hurt, so I have changed the colour scheme of TLAHA in protest. Which isn't to say that I'm not spending happy moments every day wondering what I'm going to wear to my wedding. Trip to London with mum soon... and I'm not going to turn this into a wedding blog, but I just want to note that yesterday my diplomatic talents (not inconsiderable) were stretched to the limit by family discussions about the guest list. It's all so simple in our heads, and then reality (and 'etiquette' - may that word never darken my door again) intrudes.

Well, back to designing a new filing system. Would you believe me if I said this was a highlight of my job?
