Off to Amsterdam soon (not sure I'll get much reading done there...) but time for a third book first:Book 3: How To Be Alone by Jonathan FranzenThis is a diverse collection of essays but one thread running through seems to be the question of how to locate yourself, as a writer and a reader, in the modern world. There's a concern about the merely palliative nature of technological entertainments - aren't they just a drug to relieve the symptoms of humanity when what's really needed is a genuinely therapeutic, holistic solution to living in the world? I especially like 'Imperial Bedroom', about privacy, and 'The Reader in Exile'. 19:45 . . .
