"I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library."

Arrgh pound shops. How can they be so damn ubiquitous in one of the most affluent cities in Britain? Is it because Brightonians are MEAN? Rich and mean? Or do they just have no interest in the finer things in life? Because people spend HUNDREDS of their dirty pounds in there, that's the thing. Why buy one packet of nice biscuits (or indeed the ingredients to bake them) when you can buy ten bags of stale broken misshapes? Why buy your close friends and relations thoughtful Christmas gifts when you can get a job lot of chocolate musical Santas and give something to every pointless sprog of the family tree you ever met and instantly disliked?

Mind you, it is quite good when you've got PMS and not much money...

I do worry about falling academic standards sometimes. Twice today I've had students dash out of the computer lab burbling that something's gone terribly wrong with the audio player, only to go in there and find that they've had their textbook resting on the space bar. Perhaps these are actually subtle hints to provide them with bigger desks though.
