"I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library."

Thursday, November 06, 2003
Unfortunately I am ill-qualified to write the official blog entry for Lewes Bonfire Night, as I spent much of the night eating curry and watching brass bands tune up from S's window, then a bit more of the night in the pub, then some minutes peering over people's heads at the Grand procession, then quite a long time walking back to the train station while trying to avoid setting fire to my trousers.

Controversy about burning caravans notwithstanding, November 5th has always seen Lewes residents voting with their feet and their paper mache when it comes to current bugbears. This year there was an enormous 'Greene King' effigy, representing the brewery chain currently making itself upopular by buying up local pubs and forbidding them to sell Harveys. The mere thought gives me palpitations.
