I am moving house! God help me, to Hove, but very much EAST Hove. I will be about 2 minutes walk from the sea and I will have a gas cooker and a patio! (All bonuses when you consider that we're only moving there really for the sake of cheapness.) I'm very excited, though trying not to think about struggling to move our leviathan of a sofa. Again. Not to mention the washing machine.

(Apologies to those of you who really ought to have been told this news by phone, but I have no credit at the moment. In any sense...)

I think I'm going to apply for an Eric Gregory Award again. I got onto the shortlist of 17 last time, so I have a small chance at least. And some extra cash never goes amiss. But looking at photos of this year's winners (all women except one) I was intimidated by how pretty they all are. I wonder if that is a criterion these days? If I DID ever get an award, I certainly wouldn't use the money to go and be reclusive in Newfoundland or whatever. I find it hard enough to write as it is, without removing all the everyday stimuli that inspire me.

It's really quite hot today. Perhaps I should write a eulogy to my desk fan, which is saving my life.
