"I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library."

Tuesday, July 16, 2002
WORK:
I have an interview to become a library girl in a few weeks, and the heady prospect of leaving the Language Learning Centre seems to be turning me shades of irresponsible.
Item: at about 5.40pm yesterday the centre developed an interesting charred smell, which got worse and worse despite my executive decision to plunge us all into darkness in case it was an electrical fault. Having not discovered the source by 6pm I made another executive decision to shrug my shoulders and go home as usual, leaving our priceless collection of ancient cassettes and dog-eared dictionaries to burn. Luckily (I suppose) it's all still here today, so looks like it was just a large moth falling to its fiery death in one of the uplighters. Again.
Item: I have become completely inequitable in my allocation of computer workstations, giving the nice seats by the window to my pet students and forcing the less pleasing ones into serried ranks in the middle. I also give clandestine borrowing privileges to a select few while tyrannically throwing the rule book at others. Clearly I have missed my vocation as a school librarian.

PLAY:
Sinister picnicking on Saturday was hot hot hot and necessitated so much chilled white wine that I can't remember anything about it. Aches and pains the next day, however, suggested that I played badminton with more vigour than skill, danced with more energy than grace, and sat on a very cold pavement at some point.
